Two men arrested on drug and weapons charges following traffic stop in Jamestown...
A traffic stop on Jamestown's northside led to the arrest of two men on drug and weapons posession charges.  City police say they stopped the vehicle on Prendergast Avenue about 5 p.m. last Wednesday.  Officers investigated... and, found that 40 year-old Dion Carr of Buffalo... and, 26 year-old Charles Dean of Jamestown... were in possession of 112-grams of methamphetamine... 18 grams of fentanyl... a loaded, 9-mm semi-automatic handgun, two digital scales... and $491 in cash... suspected to be proceeds from drug sales.  During the stop... Carr tried to flee on foot and was quickly apprehended.  Both Carr and Dean face charges including:  second-third-and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.  Carr is also charged with obstruction... and, Dean on a Jamestown City Court bench warrant.  Both were jailed pending arraignment.


Westfield man faces slew of charges following alleged domestic in which he rammed victim's vehicle...
A man from Westfield faces numerous charges following a domestic incident... then ramming his sports utility vehicle into the victim's car multiple times as she was trying to flee the scene.  Westfield Police were called to 34 Washington Street just before 2 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13 for a domestic violence incident... and, say 53 year-old Robert Strang III had called 911 dispatch and reported that he had been attacked by a woman at the scene.  He added that she had backed her vehicle into his... causing damage.  However... police say they found that Strang made up the story... and, that he was he was involved with an incident involving the woman at the scene.  She tried to flee... and, Strang left a short time later and caught up with the victim at an intersection and rammed her car before driving off to his house.  He was arrested last week on a warrant for second-degree criminal mischief... and, reckless endangerment... and, third-degree falsely reporting an incident... among others.


National Grid crews work to repair transmission lines in Gerry Sunday night;  About 950 customers affected...
A tree falling on two transmission lines in the Gerry-area early last evening led to a more than three-hour power outage in that part of Chautauqua County.  A National Grid spokesman says the incident occured about 7:10 p.m., and, affected 950 customers.  He says crews were dispatched to the location... where they removedd the tree, and replaced and fixed the power lines.  That was completed and power was restored shortly before 10:30 p.m. 


Molitor voices opposition to Bail Reform law, and need to at least make all Felonies bail eligible again...
The Republican candidate for the New York State Assembly's 150th District doesn't mince word when it comes to his stance on the state's Bail Reform Law.  Westfield's Andrew Molitor says he wants to see it repealed... or at least changed to make Felony charges bail eligible.  Molitor... who is First Assistant District Attorney in Chautauqua County... says he's seen plenty of times where offenders should be jailed with bail.  Molitor says selling Fentanyl... or setting another person's house on fire -- but, no one was hurt or killed -- are currently not bail eligible.  He says the current bail reform situation allows defendants to be arrested... then -- depending on the seriousness of the charge -- released a short time later.  They can then offend again... and, later be released again with an appearance ticket.  He made his comments for last weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Media One Radio Group stations. 


Despite less than ideal weather... thousands taken in the 50th Busti Apple Harvest Festival...
The weather wasn't great... but, the turn-out was for this past weekend's 50th anniversary Busti Apple Harvest Festival on the grounds of the Busti Historical Society.  Society Director Joni Blackman was pleased with the attendance... noting that hundreds of people were waiting to get in at 11 a.m. Saturday... and, there were a few thousand before the rains came.  As for Sunday... it was overcast... but, comfortable.  By her count... Blackman believed they had at least 4,000 people on hand Sunday, after about 3,000 Saturday.  She says the historical society had more than 100 vendors on hand... and, they're now able to set up on their property... and, off Lawson Road.  Blackman says the vendors had a number of items... including different kinds of coffee... holiday decorations... and, food. 


County health officials urge resident to protect themselves from EEE and West Nile Virus...
Chautauqua County health officials are reminding residents to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and protect themselves from potential exposure to mosquito-borne illnesses like Eastern Equine Encephalitis and West Nile Virus.  Chief Medical Officer Michael Faulk says the recommendations follow the recent notification from the state Health Department... announcing a human tested positive for the virus that causes EEE in Ulster County.  That's the first confirmed human case in New York State since 2015... and, it's resulted in the person's death.  Last week... Governor Kathy Hochul issued a declaration of imminent threat to public health and urges New Yorkers to follow recommendations to reduce risk of mosquito-borne illness.  Faulk says "West Nile virus... and, EEE are serious viral diseases transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito."  Some basic measures to protect yourself include: Use insect repellent... follow label directions and assist children when applying repellents... dress in long sleeves and pants when weather permits... and, reduce or eliminate all standing water around your home and property.  For more information... go on-line to HealthyCHQ.com.

Jamestown pair arrested on meth possession, other charges...
Two people from Jamestown face drug related charges after they were allegedly found with more than 7-grams of methamphetamine during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Square.  City police say a patrol stopped the car... driven by 42 year-old Tonya Thwing... on Harrison Street -- near Institute -- about 12:30 this morning.  Officers also identified the front seat passenger as 35 year-old Christopher Dellahoy.  During the stop... police say Dellahoy took a digital scale out of his pocket that had drug residue on it.  Officers searched the vehicle... and, found 7.4-grams of methamphetamine in the area that Tonya was in.  Both were taken into custody... with Thwing charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, multiple traffic citations.  Police say Dellahoy is also charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, two counts of second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia.


Silver Creek man killed in two-car crash in Wyoming County...
A north county man has lost his life in a two-vehicle crash in Wyoming County.  The Wyoming County Sheriff's Office reports the accident occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Town of Wethersfield... where a car driven by 80-year-old Richard Milazzo, Junior of Silver Creek... failed to yield the right of way to a tow truck at the intersection of Wethersfield... and, Hermitage Roads.  Milazzo was found unresponsive at the wheel and pronounced dead at the scene by a Wyoming County coroner.


City man arrested following westside street check...
A Jamestown man is accused of trying to elude police as he was being taken into custody following a street check on the city's westside Thursday morning.  Jamestown police say officers on patrol in the area of West Sixth and Cherry Streets shortly after 10 a.m., and, saw 29 year-old Tyrel Adelgren-Foster walking in the area.  Officers knew there were outstanding warrants for his arrest for Felony third-degree criminal mischief... fourth-degree criminal mischief...  criminal obstruction of breathing... and, third-degree assault.  Police tried to apprehend Foster... and, were led on a brief foot chase before he was taken into custody.  Foster was taken to the city jail on a charge of resisting arrest in addition to his warrants.  He was later arraigned, and released with appearance tickets.


Retired WJTN Morning Man Dennis Webster received commendation from legislature...
More accolades for our retired, long-time morning man here at WJTN... Dennis Webster.  He received a special commendation during Wednesday night's county legislature meeting from County Executive P.J. Wendel at the beginning of Wednesday night's meeting... which highlighted his 54 years at what is now the Media One Radio Group... referring to Dennis as a morning radio icon, who showed true professionalism and dedication to community service.  Dennis used his wry sense of humor to express his appreciation to several people... but, mainly his wife, Sheila... and, their two adult children.  During his last 47 years here at the stations... he was an early morning program host... and, he retired this past Aug. 2.  You can view the entire presentation on our Media One Group Radio website.


Busti Apple Harvest Festival celebrates it's 50th Anniversary this weekend...
The 50th annual Busti Apple Harvest Festival will again be a two-day event this year... with activites beginning on Saturday morning... and, continuing through Sunday afternoon.  The festival is put on each year by the Busti Historical Society... and, is a major fund-raiser for them.  The society's Norman Carlson says it had been a one-day event in the past... but, last year they made it a two-day program to coincide with the Busti Bicentennial Celebration.  Carlson says it went so well, they wanted to bring it back again this year.  He says there were as many as five festivals in the town in one year, but, "that was long ago."  Activities each day begin at 11 a.m., and, runs until 5 p.m.  The Busti Apple Festival will be held rain or shine on the Busti Historical Society grounds on Lawson Road... near the five corners of Busti.  People of all ages will be able to enjoy old-time craft demonstrators, along with the 1840s miller's house restoration project.  For more information... go to the historical society's website... or call 483-3670.


Kitchen fire causes significant damage to Fredonia home...
Fire has significantly damaged a single-family home in the Village of Fredonia.  Fredonia firefighters responded to a report of a kitchen fire at 557 Temple St. shortly after 6:15 p.m. Wednesdday... with one adult still inside the residence at the time.  On arrival, crews saw smoke from the roofline, and inside the house, they found heavy fire in the kitchen with extension to the wall and ceiling.  Fire damage was contained to that area, but the rest of the residence sustained heat and smoke damage.  All occupants were out of the house and accounted for, and there were no injuries reported.  The fire was ruled accidental in nature due to stovetop boilover of grease.  Mutual aid was called in from Dunkirk firefighters.  Crews were on scene for about 90 minutes.

North County man killed in Wyoming County crash...
A Silver Creek man lost his life in a two-vehicle crash in Wyoming County on Tuesday.  The Wyoming County Sheriff's Office reports the accident occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. in the Town of Wethersfield, where a car driven by 80-year-old Richard Milazzo, Jr., failed to yield the right of way to a tow truck at the intersection of Wethersfield... and Hermitage Roads.  Milazzo was found unresponsive at the wheel and pronounced dead at the scene by a Wyoming County coroner.


Wendel proposes $301.9-million, 2025 county budget that includes fifth-straignt tax rate cut...
There will be another tax rate decrease in Chautauqua County Executive P.J. Wendel's 2025 executive budget proposal... which totals $301.9-million.  Wendel unveiled the new spending plan during last night's county legislature meeting in Mayville.  The Lakewood Republican says -- it's the fifth time in his five-years in office -- he's been able to do that.  Wendel says the spending plan "reflects my strategy and vision..." that will maintain "our strong financial position..." while maintaining essential services.  While the tax rate goes down another 19-cents $1,000 assessed value... Wendel did acknowledge that the tax levy is increased in the budget by $1.9-million.  However... he says total assessments in the county are up about 5.6%.  Wendel says there are still more than three-dozen mandated state programs they must provide.  But... there are no new state mandates.  He says there are a number of capital projects included in the spending plan... led by the final phase of the Westside Expansion of the South and Center Chautauqua Lake Sewer District Expansion Project.  The new budget is due by Dec. 1, and, the legislature will begin hearings on the $301.9-million budget shortly.


Legislature gets new member, recognizes retired, long-time WJTN morning man, Dennis Webster...
Also during last night's legislature meeting... lawmakers unanimously approved the appointment of Tamara Dickey to replace David Wilfong on the panel.  Wilfong resigned last month... after deciding to move to Florida.  Dickey -- a Republican -- will fill out the remainder of his term at District 11 legislature representative.

There was also special recognition for retired WJTN Morning Man Dennis Webster... who was presented with a commendation from County Executive Wendel at the beginning of last night's meeting.  Wendel noted the many programs Dennis was on that contributed to the community, and expressed appreciation for his 47 years as an early morning show host.  Dennis thanked his family, and co-workers for their support through the years.  He retired this past Aug. 2 after wrapping up 54 years on the air here.  Congratulations on this latest honor, Dennis!


JPD seeking information on four-door truck spotted at scene of Sept. 10 homicide...
Jamestown police are looking for the owner and operator of a dark-colored, newer model pick-up truck in connection with their Sept. 10 homicide investigation.  Police investigators say they have posted a couple of pictures on-line of the four-door truck... that was seen in the Newland Avenue-area where 68 year-old Doug Howie was shot by an unknown assailant.  Officers were called to the scene... near the Pronto Mart at the corner with Forest Avenue... shortly before 9 p.m.  First-responders provided first aid... and, Howie was initially rushed to UPMC Chautauqua Hospital... and, later transferred to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa.... where he later died of his wounds.  Anyone with information on the homicide is asked to call the Jamestown Police Command Desk at 483-7537... or their confidential tip line at 483-TIPS... that's 483-8477.


Lawson pleads guilty to drug charges in Beardsley conspiracy case...
Another Jamestown resident who was involved in the local drug ring headed up by Rocco Beardsley has now pleaded guilty to trafficking heroin... methamphetamine and Fentanyl.  U.S. Attorney Trini Ross has announced that 34 year-old Charles Lawson... also known as Charley Marley... entered the plea in U.S. District Court in Buffalo to one count of intent to distribute, and to distribute, heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine.  Prosecutors say that between January and March 2020... Lawson conspired with Beardsley and others to sell the drugs in the area.  Lawson is accused of being a "close associate" of Beardsley and actively assisted Beardsley’s drug trafficking activities.  He used Facebook to advertise and sell Beardsley’s drugs... and, received narcotics for his own use as compensation for his services.  In late January of 2020... investigators conducted a controlled purchase of fentanyl from Beardsley and Lawson participated in the purchase.  Beardsley was previously convicted and is awaiting sentencing.  Lawson faces up to 20 years in federal prison, and a $1-million fine.


Gillibrand and two other Senators introduce Northern Border Security Enhancement and Review Act...
A major surge in illegal migrants crossing the northern border from Canada into the United States has prompted three U.S. Senators to proposed new legislation to deal with the issue.  One of them... New York Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand... says there's been three main problems at the northern border:  illegal migrant crossings... human trafficking that's had tragic consequences... and, the smuggling of drugs and weapons.  Gillibrand says the human smuggling industry "flourishing" along the northern border... and, guns and drugs are being trafficked into Canada.  Over the past year... Gillibrand says the number of migrant crossings has doubled to 190-thousand encounters in 2023.  With that... she and two other Senators have introduced the bi-parisan, Northern Border Security Enhancement and Review Act.  Local Congressman Nick Langworthy is sponsoring the legislation... which is now going before committees... in the House of Representatives.

City police asking for public's help in locating pick-up truck and owner operator regarding recent homicide...

County leaders, law enforcement, mouring loss of Undersheriff Rich Telford...
Law enforcement agencies across the region and Chautauqua County are mourning the loss of the second in command at the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office.  Undersheriff Rich Telford... who served the county department for 33 years... passed away after battling cancer with his family by his side Monday night.  The announcement of Telford's death was made in a Facebook post by the Sheriff's Office.  County Executive P.J. Wendel described Telford as a mentor to those in law enforcement across the county.  Wendel says it's a big loss to the county... noting that Telford was always ready to step in when the sheriff was not around... including August of 2022 when renowned Author Salmon Rushdie was attacked, and stabbed numerous times at Chautauqua Institution.  Sheriff Jim Quattrone was out-of-town at that time.  Dunkirk Police Chief Dave Ortolano, who at one time worked with Telford in investigating fires in the county, says he will be truly missed.  Wendel adds that flags on all county buildings will be flown at half-staff for the rest of the week.  Rich Telford was a part-time officer out of college before joining the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office in early 1991.  He became undersheriff in late September of 2021.  Rich Telford's late father, Chuck, was a long time account executive here at Media One Radio Group.


City man arrested after punching victim and stealing their wallet during domestic incident...
A Jamestown man has been arrested for allegedly punching another person... and, stealing their wallet during a domestic incident on the city's eastside.  Jamestown police say they were called to the location just after 2 a.m. Tuesday... and, found the suspect... 39 year-old Shyron Campbell... had left the scene.  Officers say the victim told them that Campbell had punched them in the stomach... and, pushed them into a door frame during an argument.  The victim added that he had also stolen the victim's wallet off of a table that contained multiple credit cards.  While speaking with the victim... police say Campbell returned to the scene, and was driving the car with a suspended driver's license.  He was arrested for third-degree assault... fourth-degree grand larceny... petty larceny... and, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.  Campbell was jailed pending arraignment.


More good financial news reported at City Council meeting Monday about approval of $1-Million grant for fleet maintenance building...
The Jamestown City Council Monday night got some good financial news on a couple of fronts.  First... Mayor Kim Ecklund said the city has received the $1-million state grant it was seeking to complete the new Fleet Maintenance Building on Washington Street.  While it will only cover $700,000 of that project... Ecklund says it will still be very helpful, because they'll still be geting the $1-million... with $300,000 for another DPW project.  The City Council had originally authorized borrowing up to $2.7-million for the project... but, Comptroller Ericka Thomas says they won't be asking for that amount... but, rather $1.7-million.  City officials... and, Acting Public Works Director Mark Roetzer say the DPW has a project underway that's receiving a grant... and, the left-over $300,000 will be used for that project.  The other matter was the city being able to claw back more than $2-million in American Rescue Plan Act funding that can be reallocated through the end of the year.


Bilskie named as new "Successor" CFO for county IDA...
A woman from Sugar Grove, Pa. has been named as "Successor" Chief Financial Officer for the Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency.  The CCIDA Tuesday announced that Shelby Bilskie will work under current CFO Richard Dixon until his retirement in mid-2025.  At that time... IDA Executive Director Mark Geise says she'll then become the IDA’s new CFO.  The IDA's CFO position is responsible for the financial and operations management of the IDA... along with the Chautauqua Region Economic Development Corporation, and, the Chautauqua County Capitol Resource Corporation.  Geise says Bilskie has more than a decade of experience in financial accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting, most recently as the Senior Director of Financial Planning & Analysis – Corporate Officer and Treasurer -- for Erie Management Group, LLC ... and, Hero Biodiesel, LLC, a position she’s held since 2018.  She’s also held the position of Senior Financial Analyst for Bluestem Brands (formerly Orchard Brands) from 2011 to 2018.  Geise says "we're excited to have Shelby join or team as she prepares to become the agency’s next CFO in 2025."

City Council learns the city still has just over $2-million in ARPA funding left unallocated for projects...
The city of Jamestown has just over $2-million American Rescue Plan Act funding that has not been allocated... or has been clawed back after it went unused.  That from City Comptroller Ericka Thomas... who reported to the City Council's Finance Committee last night that the $2.082-million left was after an adjustment in what was paid out for the city's new two new splash pads.  Thomas says $385,000 was reallocated to retrofit the Jamestown Police Department's firing range... which has been in disrepair for many years.  She says the city has been unable to fill three police positions... and, that funding is being reallocated.  Thomas says about $40,000 of the original ARPA allotment of $28-million was left prior to the "give-backs" of funding.  Council President Tony Dolce says the entire ARPA grant has to be alloted... with contracts signed... by the end of the year.  Dolce says those decisions will have to be made fairly soon.  Mayor Kim Ecklund says the funds not allocated would not have to go back to the federal government because the city still has costs from the COVID Pandemic that could be covered by leftover ARPA funds.  Council committees last night did approve contracting with a Provo, Utah company to retrofit the JPD Firing Range.    


City man arrested for DWI after vehicle crashes into car on Jamestown's southside...
A man from Jamestown is accused of driving drunk early Sunday morning... and, crashing his vehicle into a parked car on the city's southside.  Jamestown police were called to the scene just before 3:30 a.m., and, when they arrived... they found 41 year-old Eric Decker in the driver's seat of the suspect car.  Officers say Decker showed signs of impairment... and, he was given field sobriety tests... which he failed.  Police say both cars had "significant damage" done to them.  Decker was arrested... and, given a breath test... which showed his BAC was twice the legal limit.  He was issued appearance tickets for DWI... Aggravated DWI... and, a traffic violation. 


Altercation in Silver Creek leads to Felony DWI arrest...
A report of an altercation at a Silver Creek address early last weekend led to the arrest of a north county woman for Felony drunk driving.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to an Angell Road location about 11:30 p.m. last Saturday night... and, when deputies arrived... they were told that an intoxicated woman was at the scene... and, trying to drive a motor vehicle.  Officers got a description of the vehicle... and, a deputy saw the car in the roadway travelling on Angell Road... and, a stop was conducted.  They identified the woman as 34 year old Samantha Coy of Silver Creek... and, further investigation led to her arrest for Felony DWI, and first-degree Aggravated unlicensed operation.  Coy is to appear in Hanover Town Court at a later date.


CCHS staff "blown away" by $1.5-million grant from Golisano Foundation...
"We were blown away!"  That was the reaction of staff at the Chautauqua County Humane Society after hearing they were being awarded a $1.5-million dollar grant from the Golisano Foundation in Rochester.  The Humane Society was one of 82 non-profit organizations in Western and Central New York who were announced as receiving significant monitary awards from the foundation.  Humane Society Spokesman Brian Papalia says they were made aware they were receiving something early last week... and, they really weren't sure how much they were going to get.  Papalia says the amount they're receiving will be "game-changing" for the organization.  The announcement was made later in the week by the head of the Golisano organization... Tom Golisano... a long time regional entrepreneur, philanthropist, and civic leader.  Papalia says they definately have some needs in the coming months and years the funding will be used for... including current care for the animals... and, preparing for new state Shelter Standards in late 2025.  If you would like to check out the animals... the Strunk Road shelter is open 1 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays... and, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.  You can also go on-line to chqhumane.org.


Langworthy announces $600,000 federal grant for The Chautauqua Center...
The Chautauqua Center in Jamestown has been awarded a $600,000 federal grant to expand behavior health services in the Jamestown-area.  Local Congressman Nick Langworthy says the grant from the U-S Department of Health and Human Services will help The Chautauqua Center continue to "play a critical role in ensuring that the Southern Tier has access to affordable quality care.  This grant will strengthen their ability to provide vital mental health services, supporting individuals and families facing mental health challenges. I am proud to support their mission and this significant investment in the well-being of our community.”  The Department of Health and Human Services says the program aims to improve access to mental health care by funding treatment services at Community Health Centers in underserved areas.  Langworthy adds that the grant "enables health centers to increase their staff, broaden their service offerings, and enhance care for individuals struggling with mental health issues, including substance abuse disorders."

City man arrested for threatening another person with a knife...
A Jamestown man faces Felony charges after allegedly pulling a knife, and threatening another person with it early Sunday morning on the city's southside.  Jamestown police were called to the scene shortly after 12 a.m., and, found that 23 year-old Chance Boreck had pulled the knife and threatened the man in front of his home.  Boreck was arrested on charges of second-degree menacing... and, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.  He was jailed pending arraignment in city court.


Woman from Jamestown faces contempt charge following fight on city's southside...
A Jamestown woman has been arrested for allegedly getting into a fight with a person who had an order of protection against her early Sunday morning.  City police were called to a southside address shortly before 2 a.m. on a report of a fight.  After they arrived... officers determined that 26 year-old Abigail Quinones was ordered to stay away from the person involved... and, she was arrested for second-degree criminal contempt for violating the order.  Quinones was jailed pending arraignment.

"We were blown away!"  That was the reaction of staff at the Chautauqua County Humane Society after hearing they were being awarded a $1.5-million grant from the Golisano Foundation in Rochester.  The Humane Society was one of 82 non-profit organizations in Western and Central New York who were announced as receiving significant monitary awards from the foundation.  Humane Society Spokesman Brian Papalia says they were made aware they were receiving something early last week... but until they were notified, they didn't know it was coming.  Brian calls it a "game-changing" donation.  The announcement was made later in the week by the head of the Golisano organization -- Tom Golisano -- a long time regional entrepreneur, philanthropist, and civic leader.  The Humane Society was awarded $1.5-million as part of the awards... which total some $360-million.  Papalia says they definately have some needs in the coming months and years the funding will be used for... including new shelter standards in New York state at the end of 2025, and needs of the animals they currently have.  Golisano says the unrestricted, multi-year awards range from $250,000 to $20 million each, paid over four to five years, spanning healthcare, education, animal welfare, disability services, and other crucial community needs.  Between mostly cats and dogs... Papalia says they have about 75 animals... with most up for adoption.  If you would like to check out the animals... the Strunk Road shelter is open 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays... and, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.  You can also go on-line to chqhumane.org.

Wdowiasz to release two budgets for Dunkirk lawmakers to consider this week... 
Dunkirk Mayor Kate Wdowiasz is continuing to work on presenting two 2025 budget options to the Common Council... and, she's giving a little more insight into what those proposals will look like.  Wdowaisz says there will be a tax increase with both options, which have been dubbed the "green" budget and the "red" budget.  She says as of last week, the "red" budget contained a roughly $5-million reduction in services.  Wdowiasz says that budget only adds about $125,000 to the budget and would include a tax increase up to the state's legislative cap.  However... there would be that up to $5-million cut.  Meanwhile, Wdowiasz says the "green" budget would infuse an estimated $2-million into the budget and maintain all services and positions, but would see a larger tax increase which could go up to the city's constitutional taxing limit.  Wdowiasz will publicly unveil both of her proposals this Wednesday at Dunkirk City Hall.  Also on Wednesday... County Executive P.J. Wendel will present his budget plan during the legislature's monthly meeting.


Ripley man arrested for damaging property during altercation with another person...        
A man from Ripley is accused of damaging another person's property during an alleged altercation in the town of Ripley early last Friday morning.  Sheriff's officers say they and Westfield Police responded to a home on Pigeon Road shortly after 4 a.m., and, interviewed the residents there.  Deputies say they determined the suspect was 31 year-old Ryan Deland... and, he was arrested for third-and fourth-degree criminal mischief... and, endangering the welfare of a child.  Deland was taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.


New Chief Financial Officer appointed to CCB...

Borrello, Giglio, blast judge's decision not to send Kindt back to jail for violating his parole...
The judge's decision not to send paroled murderer Edward Kindt back to prison for violating his supervised parole is being blasted by two state lawmakers from the region.  In a press release today... State Senator George Borrello and Assemblyman Joe Giglio condemned a decision by Administrative Law Judge Michael Marasa presiding over the parole revocation hearing of Kindt to release him back into the community after two serious parole violations.  Borrello says -- "I am appalled at the judge’s decision to release rapist and murderer Edward Kindt after he committed two parole violations, including the serious charge of absconding from parole supervision."  Giglio says "when he was in prison, Kindt was written up for exposing himself to female corrections officers and for contraband and drug use.  He’s been a disaster as a parolee.  In November, parole allegedly caught him using drugs.  After a couple weeks in the Dutchess County Jail, parole sent him back to his group home."  Kindt was convicted of assaulting, raping and killing 39 year-old Penny Brown near Olean in 1999.


Former Jamestown man killed after his E-bike collides with an SUV...
A man formerly from Jamestown has died from injuries suffered after his E-bike was struck by a sports utility vehicle on a street in the Niagara County city of North Tonawanda this past Monday.  In Facebook release... North Tonawanda Police report that 58 year-old Terry Crick died from his injuries Tuesday at the Erie County Medical Center.  Police say Crick was eastbound on Tremont Street and failed to yield to the southbound SUV... which was on Twin City Memorial Highway.  The driver of the SUV is fully-cooperating with the investigation... and no charges were filed. 


Ecklund says two local entities involved as first responders to substance abuse and mental health crisises will each have a share of a $188,000 SAMHSA Grant...
Two entities on the front lines of fighting the substance abuse and mental health crisis in Jamestown will benefit from the 188-thousand dollar federal grant awarded to the city.  Congressman Nick Langworthy recently announced the grant is part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's "Projects of Regional and National Significance Program" through the Department of Health and Human Services.  Langworthy, and City Mayor Kim Ecklund say the funding will those struggling with addiction get the help and care they need.  She says the first entity will be the Jamestown Fire Dept., and the other will be Jamestown Community College which has a program to teach students about becoming EMTs.  However... Ecklund did temper recent news that the number of overdose deaths in the region have fallen in recent times.  She believes the accessibility of Narcan has helped... in reducing those numbers in addition to people getting the help they need. 


Homeless man arrested in Fredonia for alleged burglary...
Fredonia Police have arrested a homeless man who allegedly tried to burglarize a residence in the village Tuesday morning.  Village Police Chief David Price says officers received a 9-1-1 call shortly before 10:30 a.m. for a report a man attempting to break into a residence through a rear door on Lakeview Avenue.  Fredonia officers, with the help of Dunkirk Police and University Police, set up a perimeter of the neighborhood between Lakeview Avenue and Eagle Street and saw a male matching a description of the suspect running in the area.  The Sheriff's Office K-9 unit was called to assist and located the suspect, 47-year-old Jeremy Welch, within the contained area.  Welch has been charged with attempted burglary, possession of burglar's tools, and criminal mischief.  He was taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.


Schumer blasts Trump for saying he'll eliminate the cap on SALT deductions after he pushed for them in 2017...
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer is blasting former President Donald Trump for now saying that he'll eliminate the cap on the State and Local Tax deduction if elected.  It's something that both Trump and Congressional Republicans touted when Trump was in office in 2017 as part of his new tax law.  The move created a high property tax burden on New Yorkers who paid more than $10,000 a year in in taxes... taking away disposable income for people living in blue states.  Mr. Trump was speaking at a campaign stop in Uniondale, Long Island... when he made the promise.  However... Schumer says he doesn't believe Trump will follow through once far-right lawmakers have his ear.  Those lawmakers pushed for at least capping the deduction because they felt it wasn't fair to their states.  Among the lawmakers who touted the capping of the SALT deduction was former Southern Tier Congressman Tom Reed.


Gas prices in Jamestown-area finally fall, following national trend...
After several months of no change in Jamestown-area gasoline prices... the cost per gallon of regular, unleaded fuel has fallen four-cents a gallon to end the week.  The sudden, overnight change has not been explained yet... but, over the past week... AAA says the national average price has fallen seven-cents a gallon to $3.20.  To begin the week... AAA reported the local price remained slightly under $3.70 a gallon.  Officials say the primary drivers of lower gasoline prices are low demand and oil costs.  The latest data from the Energy Information Administration... shows that gas demand fell last week from 8.93-million barrels per day to 8.47 million.  Meanwhile, total domestic gasoline stocks rose to 221.6 million barrels.  The price of crude oil is now hovering at about $70 a barrel.

Former Jamestown resident killed in E-bike -- SUV Crash in No. Tonawanda...
A Jamestown native has died from injuries suffered after his E-bike was struck by a sports utility vehicle on a street in the Erie County City of North Tonawanda this past Monday.  In a press release on Facebook... Man arrested after becoming disorderly and threatening staff at UPMC Chautauqua...
A man being discharged from UPMC Chautauqua Hospital in Jamestown has been arrested after allegedly damaging his hospital bed... and, threatening staff.  City Police say 47 year-old Demian Seger is also accused of exposing himself to hospital staff during the incident.  Officers were called to the scene at 207 Foote Ave. shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday... and, arrested Seger without further incident.  Police took him to the city jail pending arraignment on charges of second-degree harassment, and criminal mischief... as well as public lewdness.


Gillibrand marks milestone for anti-gun trafficking legislation... 
A provision in the bi-partisan Safer Communities Act sponsored by New York's junior U-S Senator recently passes a milestone with more than 3,000 guns seized by law enforcement.  Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand credited the two-year old "Hadiya Pendleton and Nyasia Pryear-Yard Gun Trafficking and Crime Prevention Act..." for getting 1,000 confirmed illegal guns off the streets in the past six months alone... and that included the arrest of a gun trafficker in the Jamestown-area... and, others across New York and the nation.  She called it "incredible progress..." and, more than 100 of those arrested have already been convicted.  Gillibrand says lawmakers still have "a lot of work to do to fight the scourge of gun violence, we’ve made incredible progress prosecuting criminals and getting dangerous and deadly weapons off our streets in the two years my anti-gun trafficking statute has been in effect."  In the future... she's co-sponsoring a measure to crack down on so-called "Ghost Guns" by requiring at least some metal in them to metal detectors can spot them.  In the immediate future... Gillibrand says -- "I anticipate many more gun seizures, arrests, and convictions as a result of this statute in the years to come, and I will continue to work with my colleagues across the aisle to pass commonsense gun safety legislation." 


Gillibrand says rejected House Continuing Appropriations Resolution would have likely been dead on arrival in the Senate...
It's back to the drawing board for House Republicans after 15 of them voted against the latest Continuing Resolution to avoid a government shut-down at the end of the month.  House Speaker Mike Johnson's budget plan would have included funding of the federal government for the new fiscal year... and, a mandate that states require proof of citizenship when people register to vote.  The citizenship provision is a non-starter for New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand... adding she didn't even know what that means.  Gillibrand says "our voting rolls are really good."  She calls it a "dumb idea..." and, she believed that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York will reject that provision... so there may be a shorter-term CR that lasts until the end of the current year. 


Molitor says public safety, and affordability are main issues he's touting in run for State Assembly...
Public safety and affordability are the main issues why the Republican and Conservative parties candidate for New York's 150th Assembly District is running for office.  Westfield's Andrew Molitor is running for the seat currently held by retiring Assemblyman Andy Goodell.  In the area of public safety, Molitor -- who is currently Chautauqua County First Assistant District Attorney -- wants to reverse laws that he says have made it easier for criminals to get away with their illegal activities.  When it comes to affordability, the Westfield Republican says the first thing he would do is cut back on regulations in Albany that have made it difficult for area businesses to operate.  An example he gave is the Scaffold Law... which places liablity on an employer when an employee or volunteer is negligent.  He says it's causing insurance to go up for a lot of businesses.  Molitor is running against Fredonia Democrat Michael Bobseine.


City man arrested following Domestic Incident...
A Jamestown man has been arrested for allegedly damaging property belonging to another person during a domestic incident on the city's westside.  Jamestown police say they were called to a westside address shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday for a domestic incident.  On arrival... officers learned that 23 year-old Ronald Maund had left the scene in a car... which was later found driving away.  Police stopped the vehicle and arrested Maund for fourth-degree criminal mischief... and, he was held pending arraignment.


Silver Creek woman arrested for Harassment...
A Silver Creek woman has been arrested for allegedly harassing another person this past Monday morning... and, hitting the victim in the face.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to an Angell Road home in the town of Hanover shortly after 10 a.m. for a report of an altercation... and, arrested 44 year-old Christine Gard for second-degree harassment.

Man arrested for harassment and public lewdness following incident at UPMC Chautauqua Hospital...

Rolison and accomplice indicted for County Jail contraband incident...
The city man convicted in the fatal hit-and-run accident that killed a Jamestown teenager in late 2021 has now been indicted... along with an accomplice... for smuggling methamphetamine to him in the Chautauqua County Jail.  District Attorney Jason Schmidt says both 61 year-old Randall Rolison... and, 57 year-old Debbie Hires -- also of Jamestown -- were indicted by a county Grand Jury for fifth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance... and, first-degree promoting prison contraband.  Schmidt says the indictment accuses Hires of passing a quantity of meth to Rolison during a county jail visit this past Mar. 7.  He says corrections officers at the jail responded quickly... and, retrieved the meth from Rolison.  Officials began an investigation... resulting in the incidement.  Schmidt says the incident occurred days before Rolison was to be transported to the custody of the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to begin serving his prison sentence on the two fatal motor vehicle accidents he was convicted of in June of 2023.  The New Year's Eve 2021 hit-and-run accident in Jamestown claimed the life of 15 year-old Lexi Hughan... and, the second killed a woman, and seriously injured her husband, in early December of 2022 in the town of Arkwright. 


Investigation continues into car-pedestrian accident in Jamestown...
The investigation is continuing into a car-pedestrian accident Tuesday morning on Jamestown's southside that sent a young child to the hospital.  Chautauqua County fire dispatchers say city police and fire rescue personnel were called to the area of Newland and Barrett Avenues shortly before 8 a.m. for a reported car-pedestrian accident.  No other details have been released... but, dispatchers say the child was taken to the hospital.  More when it becomes available.


Molitor discusses reason for running for State Assembly... and, two key issues...

Second kick-off held for United Way Campaign in southern Chautauqua County...
From north -- to south county... the first-ever joint United Ways of Chautauqua County General Campaign is fully underway.  United Way officials, volunteers, and partner agencies gathered at the Bemus Point Golf Club and Tap House Tuesday afternoon for the south county event.  Campaign Co-Chair Bill Soffel says he and his wife have been involved in the United Way for many years now... and he says it's amazing what the local agency and it's nearly three-dozen partners can do.  Soffel says those 34 agencies were able to produce nearly 33,000 individual impacts during the current year.  Soffel says a big selling point for the local United Way is that 100% of the money pledged goes to programs put on by those 34 partner agencies.  The other Co-Chair is Kelly Borrello of Silver Creek... who says she's been talking to potential donors this Summer... and, was able to sit in on a meeting to help member agencies.  This year's campaign goal is $1.8-million, and, the theme is "Stronger Together."  As with the Dunkirk kick-off... yesterday's event in Bemus Point ended with a showing of the United Way's official campaign video.

During her remarks... Kelly Borrello also talked about how United Way staff and officials help the local non-profits with not only money... but, support.  She noted a program this Summer where United Way staff talked with heads of those programs to help them be more successful.  United Way Executive Director Amy Rohler praised those agencies efforts.  Rohler high-lighted some of the agencies represented at the kick-off in Bemus Point... including the Mental Heath Association... The Resource Center... Family Services... the Jamestown Boy's and Girl's Club... and, Cornell Cooperative Extention.


 

WJTN News Headlines for Tues., Sept. 17, 2024

Two sheds heavily-damaged in fire that also melts siding on nearby home...
Jamestown fire crews made quick work of a fire that fully-engulfed two sheds in the backyard of a southside home... and, prevented serious damage to another home nearby.  City fire officials say crews were called to the scene 140 Barrett Ave. shortly after 5 a.m. Monday... and, found the two sheds fully-ablaze when they arrived.  Firefighters begin dousing the fire with water from nearby hydrants... and, took steps to protect the house at 3 North Cowden Pl.  They evacuated the residents from there... and, no one was hurt.  Fire officials say heat from the fires melted siding on the back of that house... but, a crew found no fire spread... nor excessive heat build-up inside.  Fire officials say the blaze was out in about 20 minutes... and, the cause is under investigation.


Trio arrested on drug charges following traffic stop in Jamestown...
Three people have been arrested on Jamestown's southside for allegedly being in possession of illegal drugs -- including methamphetamine and fentanyl -- during a traffic stop.  City police say they stopped the vehilce... driven by 50 year-old Casey Haberberger just after 5:30 p.m. Monday... in the area of Prospect Street and The Arterial.  Officers knew that Haberberger's license wasn't valid... and, he came to a stop in the parking lot of a Prospect Street business.  Police say they identified the passengers as 50 year-old Tracey Haberberger... and, 30 year-old Steven Schrecengost.  During the stop... officers say they saw drug paraphernalia in plainview... and, a subsequent search turned up quantities of meth, fentanyl and cocaine in each person's property.  Police say they also found packaging materials... and, several digital scales with residue on them.  All three were taken to the city jail on multiple felony counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, drug paraphernailia.


Boil Water and Water Conservation orders in Brocton and Portland lifted after main is repaired...
The boil water and water conservation orders in the town of Portland and village of Brocton have now been lifted.  That from the Chautauqua County Health Department late Monday after they had issued the boil order for water customers on Webster, Ellicott, and Dahlberg Roads in recent days following a water main break in the area.  Officials say the break has been repaired... the mains have been flushed... and, there were two consecutive days of testing that shoed the water throughout the distribution system is safe for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, and, making coffee.  The Health Department's Director of Environmental Health, Jessica Wuerstle, says for this water main break... they also utilized the NY Alerts notification service to insure that residents were "properly informed about the boil water order, and water use restrictions." 


More city homes demolished, more coming, says chair of Council's Housing Committee...
The Jamestown Department of Development has hired a new code enforcement officer to help dealing with housing matters in the city.  There was also a recent demolition reported during the City Council Housing Committee's recent meeting.  Committee Chairman Bill Reynolds says that was a home on Linwood Avenue that had been cited previously for violations and was condemned.  Reynolds says another was cited for having several tires on the property on Strong Street... and, is listed for demolition work.  He says the Department of Development is also looking for a new development coordinator... and, the job has been posted.  He says there was also discussion over a news article in Buffalo about Governor Kathy Hochul discussing revenue opportunities for Airbnbs... and, Vrbos -- once they're properly zoned. 


City woman arrested for assault...
A Jamestown woman is accused of assaulting another person during a domestic incident on the city's eastside late last Friday.  City police were called to the location about 9:45 p.m., and, spoke immediately with the victim -- who had sustained an eye injury.  Officers say their investigation found that 34 year-old Desteny Badgley had assaulted the victim... and, violated an order of protection by not staying away from the person.  Badgley was arrested for third-degree assault, and aggravated criminal contempt... and, taken into custody without incident.  She was jailed pending arraignment.


City man arrested for trying to kick-in door during westside domestic incident...
A Jamestown man has been arrested for allegedly trying to kick-in the door of a westside home where the person living there had an order of protection against him.  City police were called to the location about 12:15 a.m. Sunday for a "suspicious situation."  Officers say... on arrival... they learned that 33 year-old Kieran Hunt had violated the stay-away order by going to the victim's home and trying to kick in the door before running off prior to their arrival.  Hunt was later found at a downtown establishment where he fled to... and tried to hide in the basement.  Police soon after took him into custody on one count of first-degree criminal contempt... and on outstanding bench warrants.  He was jailed pending arraignment.


Jamestown man arrested for public lewdness and harassment...
A city man is accused of exposing himself... and, punching another person with his fist... during a suspicous situation on South Main Street early last weekend.  Jamestown police were called to the scene at 7 South Main about 3:30 a.m. Saturday... and, found that 20 year-old Tyren Wofford had exposed himself to the other person... and, also stuck a person with his fist.  Wofford was arrested without incident for public lewdness... and, second-degree harassment.  He was jailed pending arraignment.

Federal lawmakers from NYS react to second, alleged assassination attempt on former President Trump...
Question's abound today about an alleged second assassination attempt on the life of former President Donald Trump at his Florida golf resort Sunday.  The former president is safe after Secret Service agents opened fire after seeing a person with a firearm near Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club while the Republican presidential candidate was golfing.  Local police report no injuries in the incident.  Officials say the alleged assailant -- identified as 58 year-old Ryan Routh -- fled in an SUV and was later apprehended by law enforcement.  The incident occured shortly before 2 p.m.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he has been briefed by the acting director of the Secret Service and applauded the agency “for their quick response to ensure former President Trump’s safety.”  The New York Democrat went on to condemn “political violence of any kind” and said the “perpetrator must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”  Local Congressman Nick Langworthy called for additional security for Mr. Trump... similar to what the president receives.  House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik of New York questioned “how an assassin was allowed to get this close to President Trump again” in light of the July attempt on his life in Pennsylvania.


City man arrested on charges following westside domestic incident...
A Jamestown man has been arrested for allegedly trying to kick-in the door of a westside home where the person living there had an order of protection against him.  City police were called to the location about 12:15 a.m. Sunday for a "suspicious situation."  Officers say... on arrival... they learned that 33 year-old Kieran Hunt had violated the stay-away order by going to the victim's home and trying to kick in the door before fleeing the scene prior to their arrival.  Hunt was later found at a downtown establishment where he fled... this time into the basement of the establishment.  Police soon after took him into custody on one count of first-degree criminal contempt... and on outstanding bench warrants. 


Jamestown man arrested for cocaine possession during traffic stop...
A city man is accused of being in possession of cocaine during a traffic stop on Jamestown's westside late last week.  City police say officers stopped a vehicle in the area of West Sixth... and, Cherry Streets... just before 11:30 p.m. last Friday for multiple traffic violations.  Police say they discovered that 49 year-old Philp Johnson was a passenger inside the vehicle when it was stopped.  Officers say their investigation found that Johnson was in possession of 6.7 grams of Cocaine HCL.  He was taken to the city jail where he was held pending arraignment on one charge of fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The budget process is fully-underway in the city of Jamestown... where officials say they're trying to hold the line on expenses... and, plug what could be a multi-million dollar shortfall.  That from Mayor Kim Ecklund... who has now held a second session with retired City Comptroller Joe Bellitto, and current Comptroller, Ericka Thomas.  Ecklund says the big concern is departmental needs... and, how to pay for them.  Ecklund says her team has spoken with each department head... and, is urging them to make out a "wish-list" of what they need, even if they can't be included in the 2025 budget proposal.  Ecklund says finances will be tight in the coming year... given that the city remains at 98% of it's constitutional taxing limit... and, loss of tax base.  She says the biggest losses are on the Rite Aid building on North Main Street... and, the other is the lowering of the assessment on the Doubletree Hotel on West Fourth.  Ecklund's 2025 executive budget proposal is to be presented by Tuesday, Oct. 8.  Ecklund made her comments for last weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Media One Radio Group stations.


United Way Campaigns in northern and southern Chautauqua County getting underway...
The United Ways of Chautauqua County will officially launch their first joint fundraising campaign this week.  Two kickoff events are scheduled for the campaign -- one today Monday, Sept. 16 at the Boardwalk in Dunkirk... and one on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at the Bemus Point Golf Club & Tap House.  United Way Community Relations Coordinator Dan Siracuse says the events are open to the public... to meet their teams, and learn more about the agencies and organizations they fund.  Silver Creek's Kelly Borrello is one of the co-chairs of this year's campaign.  She says its theme is "Stronger Together" because both agencies are coming together, and sharing resources to help revitalize both of them.  Both United Way campaign kickoff events will begin at 4:30 p.m. on their respective days.  The goal of the campaign is $1.8 million.


Kennedy man arrested for DWI after motorcycle crash...
A man from Kennedy is accused of driving drunk after his motorcycle crashed in the town of Gerry early last weekend.  Sheriff's deputies say they were called to the intersection of Route 60 and the Gerry-Levant Rd shortly after 8 a.m. last Friday.  Officers say the bike's operator... 54 year-old Reid Johnson... had been driving the two-wheeler while intoxicated.  Johnson was arrested and charged with Aggravated DWI with a Blood Alcohol Count of .18% or greater and driving while intoxicated.  He is to appear in Gerry Town Court at a later date, to answer to the charges.

Man from Jamestown arrested after being found with three pistols -- two of them loaded -- without a state permit...
A city man has been arrested for being in possession of three pistols... two of which were loaded... during a traffic stop on Jamestown's southside early this morning.  City police say their K-9 unit conducted a traffic stop shortly after Midnight for "multiple" moving violations.  During their investigation... officers say they found the two loaded guns... a third that was not loaded... and, a large capacity feeding device.  Police say 30 year-old Devan Huntington did not have a valid pistol permit and is not allowed to have those firearms.  Huntington was arrested on two counts each of second and-third-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and one of third-degree criminal possession for allegedly being in possession of the feeding device.  He was taken to the city jail pending arraignment.


Jamestown school officials, and JPD investigating on-line threat to outside district...
Officials with the Jamestown school district have been made aware of a rumor circulating at Persell Middle School regarding a Snapchat message containing a threat to a school district outside of the area.  After a "thorough investigation..." Jamestown police say they have determined there is no credible threat to Persell or any Jamestown schools.  The district adds "we continue to proactively communicate with JPD as we both monitor this rumor."  In concluding... the district says it's "dedicated to ensuring the safety of our students and staff and will continue to communicate directly in the case of any situations we hear that may affect our schools."


City man arrested after allegedly striking one person, and threatening others, with a fencing sword...
A Jamestown man is accused of being in possession of a fencing sword... and, hitting one person with it... and, menacing several others in the Brooklyn Square area.  Jamestown police were called to the scene shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday on a report of a person with a weapon.  Officers say -- when they arrived -- they found 45 year-old Lewis Campbell, Jr. with the sword in his possession.  Their investigation showed that he had struck one person with it... and, threatened several others in the presence of a child.  Campbell was arrested... and, taken to the city jail.  He was searched... and, also found in possession of a small amount of crack cocaine/fentanyl mixture.  Campbell is charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon... second-degree menacing... endangering the welfare of a child... and, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.


Gillibrand announces new "Universal School Meals Act" proposal to provide school breakfasts, lunches and dinners... 
Kids are back in school... but, New York's junior U.S. Senator says a waiver program that allowed them to receive free breakfast, lunch and dinner during the  COVID-19 Pandemic is about to expire.  Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand Thursday announced her new "Universal School Meals Program Act..." which would provide the meals to all school children... regardless of their family's income.  Gillibrand says it's allowed most New York schools to provide those meals.  She says more than 80% of schools provide those.  Gillibrand says there are currently only eight states provide Universal School Meals: California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, and Vermont.  She says studies have shown that students do better in school, and have better attendance when they get regular meals.  Gillibrand adds that the program costs the federal government about $11-billion a year... but, does not add to the local tax burden. 


Molitor sounds of on controversial Wetlands proposal for Chautauqua Lake...
The Republican candidate for the 150th New York State Assembly seat has sent a five-page analysis to the state Department of Environmental Conservation of the proposed changes to it's new wetlands regulations.  In a press release... Fredonia's Andrew Molitor says there needs to be "a reasonable balance between environmental issues and landowner rights."  Molitor says "freshwater wetlands are invaluable resources for flood protection, wildlife habitat, and open space.  At the same time, landowners have legitimate concerns that over-regulation can damage property values, impede their ability to use their property in a reasonable
manner, and/or adversely impact the use and enjoyment of other natural resources, such as Chautauqua Lake and many other lakes in our State.”  He says his biggest concern... which is shared by many others... is the proposed expansion of DEC wetland authority over every wetland, regardless of its size, that is contiguous to Chautauqua... Cassadaga... Findley and Bear Lakes... and, Lake Erie."  He says "this dramatic expansion of DEC authority exceeds both the language and intent of the statute."


Bobseine talkes state issues in Assembly run...
The Democratic candidate for the 150th District Assembly seat says his commitment to the area and the importance of how we renew our communities are among the reasons he is running this Fall.  Fredonia's Michael Bobseine says his strengths are problem solving and working with other people, and he believes that makes him qualified to represent the district that contains all of Chautauqua County, plus Seneca Nation territory in southern Erie County.  Bobseine says "we have a diverse community, and we leave no one behind."  When asked what he believes is the biggest issue facing the district, Bobseine didn't point to any one issue.  But... he did highlight public education and finding regional solutions.

Two city residents arrested following traffic stops with "large amounts" of Meth in their possession...
A pair of traffic stops in the city of Jamestown last night led to the arrests of two people found in possession of large amounts of methamphetamine.  City police say they first stopped a vehicle in the area of Falconer and Liberty Streets shortly before 7 p.m., and had prior knowledge that the driver... 19 year-old Ruben Medina... had an outstanding warrant for violation of probation.  Officers took Medina into custody without incident... and, he was taken to the city jail.  While there... police conducted a search... and, found just over 115-grams of meth in his possession.  Medina was then charged with second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  He was jailed pending arraignment.

The second traffic stop occured in on Newland Avenue -- near Foote Avenue -- on the southside shortly before 9 p.m.  City police say they saw 48 year-old Lisa Tibbetts in the front passenger seat... and, knew she was sought on a warrant from the Chautauqua County Sherff's Office for illegal drug possession... and, a Jamestown City Court bench warrant.  Prior to officers turning on their emergency lights to conduct the stop... they say Tibbetts got out of the car... and, began fleeing.  After a short foot chase and a brief struggle... Tibbetts was taken into custody.  During a search... she was allegedly found in possession of 211.7-grams of meth in her purse -- nearly half-a-pound.  Due to the quantity of meth and her attempt to flee... Tibbetts was charged with a second count of second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, resisting arrest.  She was jailed pending arraignment.


Jamestown man dies from wounds following southside shooting incident...
A 68 year-old city man has died from wounds suffered during a shooting incident on Jamestown's southside Tuesday night... but, no arrests have been made.  City police say they were called to the scene in the area of Newland and Forest Avenues about 8:40 p.m. for a reported shooting.  Officers say they found Doug Howie had been wounded in the incident... and, he was being treated by Jamestown fire rescue and Alstar Ambulance personnel.  Howie was rushed to UPMC Chautauqua Hospital... then transferred to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa., where he later succumbed to his wounds.  City police say they are still actively investigating the incident.  Anyone with information is asked to call them at 483-7537... or the JPD confidential tip line at 483-TIPS... that's 483-8477.


Falconer man pleads guilty to aiding and abetting in kidnapping in connection with murder of city man more than 10 years ago...
A man from Falconer accused of helping to abduct and kill a Jamestown man more than a decade ago in Pennsylvania has pled guilty to a federal charge in the case.  U.S. Attorney Trini Ross says 38 year-old Anthony Neubauer entered the plea before U.S. District Court Judge Elizabeth Wolford Wednesday to aiding and abetting kidnapping.   Ross says the charge carries a maximum of 20 years in prison.  Prosecutors say that on May 27, 2014... Neubauer and Matthew Rudy kidnapped Joseph Anthony... and, then traveled from Jamestown to Rudy’s property in Pennsylvania.  They say Anthony was tricked into traveling with them by an offer of cocaine.  The pair took Anthony to Pennsylvania because they believed he was cooperating with police.  After arriving in Pennsylvania, Neubauer and Rudy told Anthony they didn't have any cocaine, before shooting and killing him.  They then buried him on Rudy’s property.  Rudy was previously convicted, and is awaiting sentencing.


County hosts "9/11" Rememberance ceremony in Mayville... 
It was a Day of Rememberance across the United States... and, in Chautauqua County yesterday on Sept. 11, 2024.  Taps was played to remember the 3,000 American's killed in the "9/11" terrorists attacks during a ceremony in Mayville.  Several speakers took part in the solumn ceremony in front of the county courthouse... including past Junior Commander of the Chautauqua County American Legion... Kirk Miller.  Miller says the terrorists wanted to scare us.  However... he says it only reaffirmed American resolve.  County Executive P.J. Wendel remembered Southwestern High School Classmate Amy King... who was a flight attendant on board Flight 175... which struck the south tower of the World Trade Center in New York... shortly after the first plane crashed into the north tower.  He also remembered the firefighters who died that day... and are still dying now from cancer triggered by dust and debris at Ground Zero.


Wendel says his 2025 budget proposal will include no tax increase...
County Executive Wendel says there will be no tax increase in the 2025 budget proposal he'll present to the legislature later this month.  Wendel says he's been meeting with department heads about their individual spending plans... and, says they've been following a new, "fiscal reorganization" plan to streamline the process.  The Lakewood Republican says it's gone surprisingly well.  Wendel adds, though, that there are concerns over a possible shortfall in the 2024 budget.  He says there have been some unexpected hits... including New York state placing more of a burden on county's for so-called "safety net" expenses.  Wendel made his comments for last weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Media One Radio Group stations.


Accidental fire in Lakewood damages home...
Improperly discarded smoking materials are being blamed for a house fire in the village of Lakewood that damaged the building's interior and exterior early Wednesday evening.  County fire officials say Lakewood crews were called to the scene at 9 Alta Way about 6:45 p.m., and, mutual aid was called in from Ashville, Celoron, Busti... and, County EMS.  The county's Fire Investigation Team was called in to look for the cause once the blaze war out... and, it was ruled accidental.  No injuries were reported.

Identities of three of four victims in fatal, Cattaraugus County fire, released...
Three of the four people who died in last weekend's fatal house fire in the Cattaraugus County town of Yorkshire have now been identified.  State Police in Machias say the fire claimed the lives of 36 year-old Kristina Kipfer...  and,12 year-old Faith... and, 15-year-old Tonya cook.  Troopers say fire crews were initially called to 3825 Creek Rd. for the blaze in a single-family home.  Police say the fire apparently started near the kitchen area of the home... and, one family member was able to get out and call 9-1-1.  He's been identified as 18 year-old James Cook.  A fourth person has not yet been identified.  The fire has been ruled as "non-criminal."  
State Police say they are working with Pioneer Central School District on the status of the investigation.  The younger victims attended the Pioneer district.

Firefighters made quick work of an early morning kitchen fire at a residence in Sunset Bay.  Chautauqua County dispatchers confirmed that crews from Sunset Bay and Silver Creek were called to 12839 Pleasant Ave. shortly before 5:15 a.m..  In a Facebook post, the Sunset Bay Fire Department stated that the lone occupant of the house escaped by jumping out of a window.  Shortly after, a "well involved" fire was found in the kitchen, and firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 10 minutes.  County fire investigators and the County Medic also responded.


Wendel announces opposition to DEC Amendments to Freshwater Wetlands Act...
Chautauqua County Executive P.J. Wendel is now expressing his "firm opposition" to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s proposed amendments to the Freshwater Wetlands Act.  Wendel... who had taken a "wait-and-see" approach to the proposals... and, their impact on Chautauqua Lake... now is urging the state to delay the implementation of these new regulations, citing potential harm to local businesses, property owners, and the county’s economy.  The position is similar to the new Chautauqua Lake Property Owners Association... headed up by Jim Wehrfritz.  Wendel was out of town... and, not available for direct comment.  However... in a press release... he says "our lakes, waterways, and wetlands are integral to both the environment and the economic vitality of Chautauqua County.  The proposed changes, while well-meaning, could have far-reaching negative consequences."  Wendel has supported legislation proposed by State Senator George Borrello that calls for navigable waters -- like Chautauqua Lake -- be exempt from the new regulations.  However... Wehrfritz says it doesn't address the shoreline areas.  Wendel adds that "we are calling on the state to slow down and consider the local impact of these regulations before moving forward."  He says the Clean Water Act and Clean Water Act and New York’s Freshwater Wetlands Act have provided a strong foundation for the protection of wetlands for decades.  The new wetlands regulations are to take effect next Jan. 1.


Ripley man arrested for menacing woman with sword...
A man from Ripley has been arrested in Jamestown after he allegedly grabbed a sword during an altercation with a woman... and, swung it at her several times.  City police say they were called to a northside address shortly before 8:30 a.m. Wednesday on a report of a man with a weapon.  On arrival... they learned that 25 year-old Isiah Fuentes had grabbed the metal, ceremonial display sword... and, swung it "threateningly" at the female victim.  Fuentes was arrested for first-degree menacing... and, endangering the welfare of a child.  He was jailed pending arraignment.

City Council, Ecklund discuss 2025 Budget process...
City lawmakers in Jamestown will have a more condensed time frame for meetings to discuss the budget this year with two holidays falling on Monday's this Fall.  The City Council last night discussed the budget process during it's work session for what will happen once Mayor Kim Ecklund presents her 2025 executive budget plan on -- or around -- Tuesday, Oct. 8.  Ecklund says she'll be going back to a tradition during the Teresi Administration where she will not be involved in budget discussions with department heads.  At that point... she says it's "their" budget to discuss with department heads.  She says an additional meeting can also be set, if needed.  City Council will not be meeting on Monday, Oct. 14 for Columbus Day... or on Nov. 11... which is Veteran's Day.  Ecklund says she met with City Comptroller Ericka Thomas, and retired Comptroller Joe Bellitto for four-hours Monday for a preliminary review.  She says there are definate challenges in the new spending plan... and, they will lay that out as best they can.  Ecklund and City Council President Tony Dolce noted that council would likely vote on a final budget at it's Nov. 25 voting session to make the Dec. 1 budget deadline. 


Jamestown development leaders, others to host kick-off meeting tonight for city's new Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Code Update...
Jamestown city leaders will hold a public meeting on it's Comprehensive Plan-and-Zoning Code Update tonight in the mezzanine at Wicked Warren's on West Third Street.  City Development officials say it's being presented by C&S Companies... which is undertaking the first update of the plan in several years.  City Council Housing Committee Chairman Bill Reynolds said last night that the program will run from 6 to 8 p.m. at the craft beer/eatery at 119 West Third St.  The public is invited to attend.  City officials say public input will help the Department of Development team as they being the process of improving zoning codes, addressing the current and future community needs and priorities, and will help with development and growth in Jamestown.


City man arrested for allegedly violating order of protection for second-time in a week...
A man from Jamestown has been arrested for the second-time in the past week for violating an order of protection during a Gun-Involved Violence Enforcement detail.  City police say a Domestic Violence Detail was conducting follow-up investigations, and checking for order of protection violations shortly before 1 p.m. Monday on the northside.  Officers say while at this address... they found 33 year-old Mackenzie Kelley hiding in a tent.  Police say Kelley was violating a full stay away order of protection issued out of city court... and, it was the second time in under a week he had done that.  Officers took Kelley into custody without incident... and, he was charged with second-degree criminal contempt... and, was jailed pending arraignment.

State School Board's Assoc. president says members have several financial concerns with new school year underway...
An official with the New York State School Boards Association says there are a number of financial concerns facing local boards of education with the beginning of a new school year.  NYSSBA Board President Sandy Ruffo of Binghampton says when surveyed... a large number of their 5,200 members expressed concern over the "unpredictability" of their finances in the 2024-25 school year.  She says Governor Kathy Hochul lended to that by proposing a new Foundation Aid formula this past year.  Fortunately.. Ruffo says some of the proposals... including the Foundation Aid change... were put on the back burner.  In fact... the state legislature heard so much concern over some districts getting their Foundation Aid cut... that lawmakers eventually restored aid to those schools facing reductions from the previous year.  Ruffo says another major concern is over inflation... and, higher costs for a number of items... including fuel, health care, and supplies.  She says adding to that is the state's 2% property tax cap.  Ruffo says the Rockefeller Institute of Government held five sessions with school leaders to gauge the issues they were concerned about. 


Third-Place Powerball winning ticket sold in Jamestown...
There were two third-prize winning tickets sold in yesterday's Powerball Game... and, the New York Lottery has announced that one of those was sold in Jamestown.  The Lottery reports the local ticket was sold at the Crosby's mini-mart at 2805 North Main St. and the other was sold in the Bronx.  Each is worth $50,000.  The winning numbers for the Powerball game are drawn from a field of one to 69.  The red Power Ball is drawn from a separate field of one to 26.

A city man has been arrested for allegedly punching a woman several times in the face and head... leading to temporary hearing loss in one ear... during a domestic incident Sunday night.  Jamestown police were called to an eastside address about 8:30 p.m., and, learned that 29 year-old Naquan Evans had struck the victim several times... and, she had visable marks around her faces... and, a bloody nose.  Evans was found outside the house... and, he was arrested on one count of third-degree assault.  Police say there was also a valid stay-away order of protection for the victim, and two others living there... and, Evans also faces three counts of first-degree criminal contempt... and, one of aggravated criminal contempt.   He was jailed pending arraignment.


Two arrested on drug-related charges following Friday night traffic stop...
Two people from Jamestown were arrested early last weekend on drug-related charges following a traffic stop in the city's northside... and, one previously had numerous Felony drug convictions.  Jamestown police say their K-9 Unit stopped a vehicle on Prather Avenue -- near Forest -- shortly after 7 p.m. last Friday for moving and equipment violations.  During the investigation... officers found that both 49 year-old Kimsue Nutting... and, 42 year-old James Turner II... were both in possession of a quantity of suspected methamphetamine.  Police say Nutting was also found with a large quantity of packaging materials and a digital scale.  Both suspects were taking to the city jail... and, once inside... officers found that Nutting had concealed 55.5 grams of meth on her person.  A background check also turned up the previous drug convictions... and, she was charged with third, fourth-and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... two counts of first-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia... and tampering with Physical Evidence.  Turner is charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  He was released with appearance tickets... and, Nutting was held pending arraignment.


Four family members killed in fatal house fire in Cattaraugus County...
Four people are now confirmed dead following an overnight house fire in the Cattaraugus County town of Yorkshire.  State Police in Machias say firefighters were initially called to 3825 Creek Rd. shortly after 2 a.m. for the blaze in a single-family home.  Troopers say the fire apparently started near the kitchen area of the home... amnd, one family member was able to get out and call 911.  Police say the other four family members were located inside the home dead.  The State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and Forensic Identification Unit were assisted by State Fire and Yorkshire Fire Department personnel at the scene. Multiple fire companies and EMS in Cattaraugus County responded to the scene to assist.  No identifications have been release.  However... it's believed that some of the victims attended Pioneer Central School.  The investigation is continuing.


North County man arrested for illegal gun possession...         
A Silver Creek man is accused of being found in possession of a stolen, loaded, and defaced .38-Special handgun back in mid-August.  Sheriff's deputies say they were called to a reported altercation in the north county village back on Aug.11, and, the case was turned over to the department's Criminal Investigation Division.  Further investigation found that 31 year-old James Hurley, Jr. was in possession of the Rock Island Armory Model 206 gun... and, he was arrested last Wednesday on one count each of second, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.  He was taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.


Wendel says Army Corps of Engineers work on Chautauqua Lake to being soon...

Wendel... who says they are currently drafting final contracts with the Corps to do the work on the lake.  Wendel says there will be a bigger rollout soon about that work... and, where it will take place.  He says they're finalizing contracts between the county and Army Corps right now.  Wendel says the "New Start" program is something that all the lake groups -- and the county -- have really been looking forward to.  He says the goal is to find the source or sources of the invasive weed and Harmful Algal Bloom problem... and, not just dealing with the symptoms.  Wendel says... while we had a mild Winter... there were still a lot of weeds -- especially early on this year.  He says that's because there was a lot of rain during those months, which caused a lot of run-off into the lake.  Wendel made his comments for last weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Media One Radio Group stations.


Frewsburg man arrested for possessing stolen property in Ellicott...
A Frewsburg man familiar to police has been arrested in the town of Ellicott for allegedly stealing items from a store late last month.  Ellicott Town Police say 29 year-old Robbie Stearns was taken into custody following an investigation into the theft from the West Ellicott location on Aug. 24.  Officers say they also searched Stearns... and found a stolen debit card in his possession.  He was arrested for fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property... and, was issued an appearance ticket for Ellicott Town Court at a later date.

Beardsley's Wife sentenced in connection with drug trafficking case...
A city woman married to convicted local drug-dealer has been sentenced to probation and community service for helping her husband with his illegal drug trafficking activities.  U.S. Attorney Trini Ross announced Thursday that 38 year-old Stacey Beardsley... also known as Stacey Peterson... received two-years probation, and, 50 hours of community service.  Prosecutors say that between late 2018, and March 2020... Beardsley’s husband, Rocco Beardsley... was involved in a drug trafficking conspiracy.  He's accused of purchasing and distributing large quantities of heroin, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and other controlled substances in the Jamestown area.  They say Stacey Beardsley knew of these drug trafficking activities, financially benefited from them, and actively concealed and assisted with them.  Following an arrest in May of 2019... Rocco called his wife from jail... and, asked her to go to Erie, Pa. to get his "stuff..." which included drugs.  However... prosecutors say she failed to notify any authority about the request, and instead drove to Erie to pick up the "stuff."  On her return trip... she was stopped by police and they found quantities of meth and heroin.  In January 2020... two undercover drug buys from Rocco Beardsley took place at the home he shared with Stacey Beardsley... and, she failed to notify authorities about it.  He was previously convicted and is awaiting sentencing.


Another member of Beardsley drug ring pleads guilty in Federal drug case...
A Jamestown man has pleaded guilty in federal court for his part in selling large amounts of fentanyl, heroin, and methamphertamine... and, trying to cover-up what happened in one overdose death.  U.S. Attorney Trini Ross announced Wednesday that 51 year-old Curtis Snyder entered the guilty plea in U.S. District Court to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and to distribute, heroin, fentanyl, and methamphetamine.  Prosecutors say Snyder was an associate and co-conspirator of drug ring-leader Rocco Beardsley.  In April of 2019... a person identified as J.A. was found dead from an apparent overdose at a Jamestown home... and, Beardsley was believed to be involved in the overdose.  About a month after the death... Beardsley sent Snyder to another individual's home to force that person to make a video regarding Beardsley’s lack of involvement with J.A.’s overdose death.  In exchange... Snyder would receive a “bundle” of heroin/fentanyl.  He faces a maximum of 20 years in federal prison, and a fine of $1-million. 


Langworthy announces $4.75-million in funding for "Living Shoreline" project in Dunkirk...
It was an easy decision to support construction of a new, "living shoreline" project for Dunkirk Harbor to better protect the shoreline and important infrastructure in the north county city.  That from Local Congressman Nick Langworthy... who says he enjoyed spending part of many summers along the Dunkirk waterfront.  Langworthy says he feels it's important for the new, smaller breakwaters to help preserve the shoreline for generations to come.  He says they will be used to firm up the shoreline to withstand the sometimes fierce Winter storms on Lake Erie.  Langworthy Thursday announced that he's secured $4.75-million in the 2025 federal budget... for the project.  He says this "critical investment" is in the Homeland Security Appropriations Bill... passed by the House of Represenatives last June... and, will be used to create off-shore breakwaters using sand, rocks and plants to secure the shoreline.  


NYSBBA Board President talks potential cellphone ban, other state issues...
The New York State School Board's Association would like to have local control maintained in deciding whether to ban cellphones in the classroom.  That the association's Board President, Sandy Ruffo of Binghampton, as the controversial topic continues to be debated.  Ruffo says a March survey of school leaders showed that cellphone use is one of the major issues currently.  She says Governor Kathy Hochul supports a ban... but, is conducting a "listening tour" to see what people want.  Ruffo adds some are looking at other alternatives... including locked "Yonder" bags that can be used to lock away phones until the end of the day.  They're also looking at having students put them in their lockers... but, adds that's hard to enforce.  Some though... have taken the position that schools should help teach responsible cellphone use.  She says no legislation has been proposed, nor approved yet in the state. 


Pair from Jamestown now jailed without bail following drug investigation, and one suspect barricading himself in home... 
Two people from Jamestown have been jailed without bail following a several hour stand-off with police... at the same home where an alleged shooting took place two weeks ago.  City police also say that the woman arrested -- 29 year-old Kylah Seiberg -- had to be treated for an illness after coming in contact with 7-grams of Fentanyl when she was brought to the city jail.  She faces new charges of fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, tampering with physical evidence.  Police say they were called to 84 Victoria Ave. shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday for a "burglary-in progress" with two unknown people inside an apartment.  When the shooting occured on Aug. 17... police say they raided the home after the victim was taken to the hospital.  They found nearly 112-grams of methamphetamine, 23.3-grams of powder cocaine... 9.4-grams of crack cocaine... 66.5 grams of fentanyl... and, a 9-mm pistol.  Officers say Seiberg, and 38 year-old Jensen Vazquez... fled the scene.  Police learned that both had returned to the residence Tuesday... and, they arrested Seiberg quickly.  However... Vazquez refused to come out... and, he had reportedly armed himself with a gun.  He barricaded himself inside... but, the JPD SWAT Team and other agencies were able to use smoke bombs and later found him hiding in the attic.

Two city residents arrested on drug-related charges following raid, and one barricading themself inside home...
Two Jamestown residents have been arrested... one following a several hour stand-off with police... at the same home where an alleged shooting took place two weeks ago.  City police were called to 84 Victoria Ave. shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday for a "burglary-in progress" with two unknown people inside an apartment.  When the shooting occured on Aug. 17... police say they executed a search warrant after the victim was taken to the hospital.  Inside the apartment and a vehicle associated with the occupants... detectives found nearly 112-grams of methamphetamine, 23.3-grams of powder cocaine... 9.4-grams of crack cocaine... 66.5 grams of fentanyl... and, a 9-mm pistol.  The two occupants... identified as 29 year-old Kylah Seiberg, and 38 year-old Jensen Vazquez... fled the scene.  Police learned that Seiberg and Vazquez had returned to the residence Tuesday.  They say Seiberg was taken into custody fairly quickly... but, Vazquez refused to come out... and, he had reportedly armed himself with a gun... and, barricaded himself into part of the home... making it difficult to enter.  The JPD SWAT Team was called in to assist with other agencies... and, after deploying chemical munitions to force Vazquez to come out... he was later found hiding under some insulation and floorboards in the attic.

Police say they conducted another search of the home... and, found just over 65-grams of fentanyl in the same area where Vazquez was found.  He was arrested on five counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and one each of second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia... and, second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  Seiberg was arrested on four counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and one each of second-degree criminal possession of drugs... second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia... and, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.  The investigation into the Aug. 17 incident is continuing.  If you have any information on it... call the JPD Tips line at 483-TIPS... or 483-8477.

County Health Dept. warns of two rabid cat cases in Jamestown...
Two feral or stray cats have been found in the city of Jamestown that have died from the rabies virus.  That from the Chautauqua County Health Department which confirmed the deaths late Wednesday.  Officials add that no other cats have been identified as having rabies and currently the Health Department has no other open investigations of potentially rabid cats.  The first cat apparently got the virus during an animal fight.  The second was found in poor health by a resident who often feeds feral cats.  The resident was scratched by the cat... and, had to be treated with post-exposure prophylaxis.  County Director of Environmental Services Jessica Wuerstle says -- "These incidents should serve as a reminder to residents to take precautions around feral or stray animals and that animal rabies is a serious public health concern and continues to be present in Chautauqua County."  Wuerstle adds that animals... such as feral or stray cats... that are not current on their rabies vaccine are at risk.  Only mammals can transmit the rabies virus, so animals like birds, snakes, and fish do not pose a risk for rabies. 


City woman arrested for alleged animal cruelty...
A Jamestown woman faces multiple animal cruelty charges following a complaint that she was seen physically beating her small dog on the city's eastside.  Jamestown police say they were called to the scene shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday... and, spoke with a witness... who said that 26 year-old Caroline Penhollow had slapped the dog... then picked the dog up by the back of its neck... and, threw it into a tent where she was seen kicking the small dog.  The witness said the dog was yelping loud enough for the neighbors to hear three doors away.  Officers say Penhollow is also accused of having a ferret inside the tent that she had not fed or given water to in about four days while it was inside a cage with a reported broken leg.  Police say they saw the small dog visibly terrified from the human contact.  Officers took Penhollow into custody without incident... ane, seized both animals.


Quattrone announces new effort to find Yolanda Bindics' former boyfriends in her murder case...
A former boyfriend of Jamestown's Yolanda Bindics is now the lone "person of interest" in her 2004 murder... and, the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office wants to find him.  That from Sheriff Jim Quattrone during a Wednesday press conference in Mayville about the disappearance... and, death of the 25 year-old Bindics.  Quattrone also announced that -- after intensive investigation -- former Jamestown Police Officer Michael Watson has been cleared of any wrongdoing.  With that... Clarence Carte is now the focus of the investigation... and, Quattrone announced the release of some new surveillance photographs... and, some have been re-released.  The new photos include one showing Carte leaving the Kwik Full store at Washington Street and Fluvanna Ave. and looking in the direction of the Family Dollar Store... where Bindics was getting off of work the night of Aug. 10, 2004.  Quattrone adds there's also a picture of Carte's vehicle heading toward the gas station's Fluvanna Avenue exit.  He says a new confidential tips line has been set up in the case.  Quattrone says that number is (716)-703-5955.

Quattrone to hold press conference to update public on Yolanda Bindics case...
Chautauqua County's top-cop is expected to give an update on the cold-case investigation into the August 2004 murder of Jamestown's Yolanda Bindics later today.  Sheriff Jim Quattrone has called a press conference for 1 p.m. at the county's Emergency Services Building in Mayville.  The 25 year-old Bindics went missing the night of Aug. 10, 2004 following her work shift at the Family Dollar Store on Fluvanna Avenue when she failed to return home.  Police have now been able to put Bindics' former boyfriend, Clarence Carte, in that area around the time of her disappearance.  At last word... Carte was living in Florida.  He is the father of Bindics' youngest child.  Yolanda Bindics' skeletal remains were found in a state forest area in the town of Charlotte on Sept. 10, 2006.


First day of class goes well, overall, for SWCS...
Tuesday was the first day of classes for several Chautauqua County school districts... including Southwestern -- just outside of Jamestown.  It's also the beginning of the final year for School Superintendent Maureen Donahue... who will be retiring at the end of the school year next June.  However... for Tuesday... Donahue says it's "very exciting" to welcome the students back to school... and, with capital projects still underway, it gives them a chance to also let students and others see the progress.  As for that construction... a lot is taking place in the high school cafeteria... which is being expanded, and will include a new outdoor area for when the weather is good.  However... Donahue says the renovated area won't be ready until next week.  She says the new section won't be open until the end of September. 


Whitaker says all ready for first-day of classes in JPS...
Major capital projects continue in the Jamestown Public School district... but, all is ready for the start of classes for the 2024-25 school year this morning.  That from School Superintendent Kevin Whitaker... who says all has gone well leading up to the first day of classes... which he says will be a half-day for all students.  Dr. Whitaker says the biggest projects are going on at the high school and Fletcher Elementary... and, he says aside from a "couple of hiccups..." things will be buttoned up for the students.  As for staffing... Dr. Whitaker says they've added some 50 new teachers and staff... which is what they needed to begin the new school year.  However... he says they are still looking for some support staff... and, some to also fill their AIS programs.  Whitaker made his comments for last weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Media One Radio Group stations.


Jamestown man arrested after breaking in door window during domestic...
A city man sought on a Jamestown city court warrant has been arrested for allegedly breaking in through a window during a domestic dispute on the city's southside.  Jamestown police say they were called to the scene about 7 p.m. Monday night on a report of a domestic-in-progress.  Offices say they located the man involved -- 35 year-old Jonathan Torres -- outside of the residence in the street.  Police say they knew that Torres had a warrant, and arrested him.  Officers then spoke with the female victim... and, she told them that Torres had damaged a door window while trying to gain entry to the home.  Their investigation showed that Torres did this while two children were on the other side of the door... and, were scared and crying.  Torres was also charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief... and, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.


Langworthy announces near $425,000 FAA grant for Jamestown Airport project...
The Chautauqua County Airport near Jamestown is receiving nearly half-a-million dollars from the Federal Aviation Administration to support a project to reconstruct the lighting an signage on the main runway.  Local Congressman Nick Langworthy made the announcement recently that the airport is getting a $424,800 as part of the Airport Improvement Program administered by the FAA.  Langworthy says the the project will be used to rebuild the lighting and signage on Runway 13/31 that have reached the end of their useful life... and, reinforce the structural integrity of the just over 4,000 foot runway.

Several school districts in southern Chautauqua County have first day of classes today...
Most Chautauqua County school districts have their first day of classes today.  However... while students resume learning for another school year... school board members say finances... and, cell phone use are also issues.  That from the New York State School Boards Association... which conducted a survey back in June and July of 543 school board members across the state.  They say 60% of those members believe their biggest challenge in the upcoming school year will be dealing with their districts’ finances – more than any other single issue.  That's due to the loss of federal stimulus dollars... and, what state funding will look like in the next school year.  Among the districts starting class today are: Southwestern... Falconer... Frewsburg... Bemus Point... Randolph... Sherman... and, Cassadaga Valley.  The Jamestown Public Schools begin on Wednesday... along with Clymer and Panama.  And... Chautauqua Lake begins on Thursday.


Homeless woman arrested in Jamestown as fugitive from justice...
A homeless woman in Jamestown has been arrested after city police conducted a street check on a person walking in the middle of the roadway on Jamestown's westside.  City police say they were called to the area of Monroe Street and Isabella Avenue about 11:20 a.m. Monday... where motorists were having to drive around Katelin Smith.  Officers say Smith initially gave them a false name... but, soon had her real name... and, the fact she was wanted on an outstanding warrant from Warren County, Pennsylvania... making her a fugitive from justice.  She was arrested for being a fugitive from justice... and, for false personation.  Smith was jailed pending arraignment.


City woman arrested for driving while her license had been suspended 26 times...
A Jamestown woman who has had her driver's license suspended 26 times has been arrested after she was stopped for allegedly driving with no lights on.  City police say they saw the vehicle... driven by 31 year-old Sienna Swanson... in the North Main Street corridor and stopped the car near the intersection with West 10th Street about 2:30 a.m. last Thursday.  They found that Swanson was driving the vehicle with the more than two-dozen suspensions for 10 different incidents.  With that she was arrested for Felony first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.  She was booked in city court... and release with appearance tickets.


Jamestown Labor Day Festival includes music, food and fireworks...
There was plenty of food, music and fireworks last Sunday afternoon and evening at the 43rd annual Jamestown Labor Day Festival at Bergman Park.  Some of the afternoon music was provided by the local band "Party McFly" on the main stage... and, Pearl City Jazz on and near the basketball courts.  The other afternoon highlight was was the presentation of the annual George Ritzer Memorial Labor Award to retired Sheetmetal union Business Manager, Steven Thorpe.  Thorpe noted the history of Labor Day... and, also thanked Sheetmetal Worker's Local #112's former Business Representative, Rick Joslyn... who he replaced in 2005.  He says Joslyn taught him how to value their union members, and how to handle the position.  Thorpe also thanked former Central Labor Council President Dave Wilkinson for his support.  Proclamations were presentated by State Assemblyman Andy Goodell, Jamestown Mayor Kim Ecklund, and Christine Rinaldi from Congressman Nick Langworthy's local office. 


City man arrested for violating order of protection...
A Jamestown man has been arrested for allegedly violating an order of protection -- issued five days earlier -- to stay away from the woman he was found with last Friday night.  City police say they were called to a westside address shortly after 6 p.m. and found that 45 year-old Jeremy Ramsey had violated the order.  He was arrested for second-degree criminal contempt... and, taken to the city jail pending arraignment.


Two north county men arrested during recent drug raid...
Two north county men face Felon drug charges following a raid on a home just over a week ago on Dennison Road in the hamlet of Forestville.  Sheriff's officer say the search warrant was executived at 10-925 Dennison just after 8 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 23.  Deputies say they found two men inside.  They were: 33 year-old Joshua Vanbuskirk of Forestville... and, 25 year-old Franklin Silvagnia.  During the search... investigators says they seized 14.8 grams of crack cocaine, 12.79 grams of fentanyl, scales and packaging material for the sale and distribution of narcotics and $1,055.  Both Vanbuskirk and Silvagnia were charged with four counts each of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia.  Both were taken to the County Jail pending Centralized Arraignment.


With Labor Day holiday... BPU announces garbage/recycling schedule revisions...
With Monday being Labor Day... the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities resumes today with Monday’s regular garbage and recycling collection delayed until today.  In addition... Tuesday's collection will be delayed until Wednesday... Wednesdays to Thursday... and, so on. The Yard Waste Site on Monroe Street will again be open -- as usual from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. -- on Wednesday, Sept. 4, but will be closed on Saturday, Sept. 7, to allow for Saturday's garbage and recycling collection because Monday was a holiday.
