Surdyk outlines draft proposal for committee on new uses for $640,000 on federal HOME funding...
There are a couple of potential programs the city of Jamestown's Department of Development could be funding using $640,000 in left-over, federal HOME monies. That from Development Director Crystal Surdyk... who says her department has been scrambling to find ways to use the funding after the City Council voted down using it to help with remediation for the Gateway Lofts housing project on Water Street. She says she told Housing Committee members this week that they would put $140,000 in their Home Investment Partnerships program, and the other $500,000 for their Home Development Program... which includes doing site work, and possibly some demolition work. However... she says there would have to be a plan to rebuild on that site. She says the owner-occupied aspect of the program's also helps with their desire to spur development of new housing in the city. Despite City Council rejecting that funding 5-4 at last month's meeting... the $77-million Gateway Lofts project has it's investor funding lined up... and, will begin in the near future. Lawmakers said they wanted to see the funding go more towards rehabilitating current housing or creating new housing.
