Fredonia Faces Another Boil Water Order: What Residents Need to Know

The Village of Fredonia finds itself in yet another tricky situation, as a new boil water order has been issued for its residents. This recurring issue stems from elevated turbidity levels detected at the water treatment plant, making the drinking water potentially unsafe. The Chautauqua County Health Department has stressed the importance of boiling water for drinking, cooking, and even brushing teeth until they can confirm it's safe. Residents are advised to bring water to a rolling boil for at least a minute, a frustrating message for a community that's already experienced nine such warnings in just three years.

Local businesses are feeling the heat too, as the ongoing boil orders create hesitation among customers. The Fredonia Fire Department plans to start water quality sampling soon, but until the results are in, everyone is left in limbo. Business owners like Amy O’Connell from The White Inn are scrambling to provide bottled water to guests, while others worry about the long-term effects on their establishments. The water situation has reached a boiling point, and Fredonia's Mayor Michael Ferguson has plans in the works for a new water system, but residents are understandably anxious for a solution.

It seems that for Fredonia, boiling water is going to be more than just a method for making soup for the foreseeable future. Here's hoping a reliable water supply is just around the corner—otherwise, it might be time to stock up on bottled beverages!

Fredonia issues another Boil Water Order; 10th in three years...
Another boil water order has been issued for the village of Fredonia's water system customers due to a disruption at the water treatment plant.  The Boil Order was issued this morning by the Chautauqua County Health Department.  Officials say the disruption at the water treatment plant led to water with elevated levels of turbidity getting into the distribution system.  They add the water could contain harmful microbes.  The water entering the water treatment plant from the Fredonia Reservoir has high levels of turbidity which cannot be adequately treated at the plant.  Health officials say that boiling the water kills bacteria and other microbes that may be present.  The State Health Department of Health requires that anytime water is not adequately treated a boil water order must be issued to notify customers.  All Fredonia customers must boil water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth and making coffee until further notice. Water must be brought to a rolling boil for one minute then cooled prior to use.  This is the village water system's 10th boil order in the past three years.  Once the turbidity levels drop to acceptable levels and the distribution system has been flushed... the Village will collect water samples on consecutive days to make sure the water is safe.  For more information... call the Health Department at 753-4481... or the village at 679-2307.

Jamestown Drug Raid: Seven Arrested and Major Fentanyl Seized

In a major narcotics bust on March 17, 2026, authorities in Jamestown, New York, executed a search warrant at an apartment and arrested seven individuals who were allegedly up to no good. The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Jamestown Police Department and even the SWAT team, raided the location, only to find a shocking amount of fentanyl, crack cocaine, and drug paraphernalia.

During the raid, investigators seized around 32.5 grams of fentanyl, 11.3 grams of crack cocaine, a stash of suboxone, and a hefty sum of $3,373 in cash—definitely not pocket change! The suspects ranged in age from 26 to 61 and included names like Jaqwan L. Martin and Anthony J. Wallace Jr., all facing multiple drug possession charges.

Interestingly, among the arrested were individuals with outstanding warrants, which adds yet another layer to this already tangled web of drug-related offenses. It's a stark reminder that sometimes, what happens behind closed doors isn't as harmless as it seems. Let's hope this bust serves as a wake-up call for those involved in the local narcotics trade, but it also makes you wonder—how many more like this are happening in towns across the country?

Gillibrand voices on-going opposition to SAVE Act still before the U.S. Senate...
As with recent polling of Americans... there is bi-partisan support for a measure that would require voter identification to vote in federal elections.  However... while Republicans support the "Safeguard American Voting Eligibility" -- or SAVE Act... Democrats continue to voice concern that it will take voting eligibility away from millions of Americans.  Among those is New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand... who says... under the current proposal... even a driver's license isn't enough.  She says you need a birth certificate that matches your current name... so if you have a birth certificate, but, if it's just in your maiden name, you have to get it changed.  She adds about half the population also doesn't have a valid passport... which is also needed in some cases.  Gillibrand adds that the measure would also make it difficult for active military service members to vote.  The Democrat says the SAVE Act is being pushed by President Donald Trump because he believes it's the only way Congress will remain in Republican hands after the mid-term elections... and, that's why they are fighting against the legislation and calling on Republicans to negotiate a true, bi-partisan bill.  The SAVE Act was approved in the House of Representatives last year.  However... in the Senate, the measure is the subject of a Democrat fillibuster, that requires 60 yes votes to bring it to the floor.  Currently... Republicans have a 53-47 majority in the Senate.

Michael Burham Sentenced to Life for Shocking Murder of Kala Hodgkin

In a deeply disturbing case that highlights the grim realities of domestic violence, Michael Burham, a 37-year-old man from Jamestown, has been sentenced to 25 years to life for the murder of Kala Hodgkin. Burham pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for shooting Hodgkin on May 11, 2023, a tragic event that occurred just two months after he was charged with raping her.

What makes this case even more sensational is Burham’s daring escape from the Warren County Jail, which led to a multi-day manhunt that gripped the attention of the public. While he was eventually captured, Burham’s criminal history continued to unfold, as he was also convicted in Pennsylvania for escape and kidnapping an elderly couple, resulting in another 25-year sentence.

Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt expressed disappointment that Burham could be eligible for parole after 25 years, reminding us just how complicated justice can be. The family's impact statements will play a crucial role in any future parole hearings, as they deal with the painful aftermath of Hodgkin’s murder. This case serves as a sobering reminder of the need for awareness around domestic violence and the tragic consequences it can bring.

It’s a tough pill to swallow, but at least one thing’s for certain: in the twisted drama of Burham’s life, it seems escape just led to more trouble.
