Wendel proposed $309.7-million, 2026 budget that includes 54-cent per thousand tax rate decrease...
Chautauqua County Executive P.J. Wendel is proposing a tentative, $309.7-million, 2026 budget that again cuts the property tax rate... and, keeps the levy under the state's 2% tax cap. At the same time... Wendel says it also continues investments in services, infrastructure, and long-term fiscal stability. The Lakewood Republican presented the spending plan during last night's county legislature meeting... and, says the rate is $6.17 per $1,000 assessed value -- a 54-cent per $1,000 reduction. Wendel says his administration has "continued to do more with less..." as it has the past five years. He says the tax levy is increased in the budget by $1.7-million... to just under $75-million. He says that increase is due mainly to increased costs of more than 40 state mandated programs the county has to provide. Wendel adds that the tax levy increase is well below the current rate of inflation... which is 3.4%. He says among the items funded in the 2026 budget plan are completion of the Ripley and South County "Shovel-Ready" development sites... and, an additional Fly Car for the Clymer and Sherman areas. The legislature will shortly begin reviewing the budget plan... which needs to be in place by Dec. 1.
