Large majority of residents at Celoron public meeting opposed to Cannabis dispensary in village -- mainly near park...
The vast majority of the approximately 50 people on hand for a public meeting about a proposal to "opt-in" to the sale and or consumption of marijuana in the village of Celoron oppose it.  The village board held the meeting at the Community Center... and, Mayor Scot Schrecengost said there are three commercial/industrial areas where a dispensary could be located... with one notable exception.  Schrecengost says it may not be on the same road, and within 500-feet of a permanent youth facility... such as a school or church.  However... a park or playground is not considered part of what the New York state refers to as a "youth facility."  The village did opt-out of having a dispensary in 2021 when state was giving communities the option.  However... most residents on hand -- including Brandy Smith -- did not feel a dispensary should be anywhere near the new playground at Lucille Ball Memorial Park because there are kids at the playground, and others playing baseball at the sports field.  Resident Sue Schrecengost says -- with the new playground equipment -- the park is a nice destination... and, a cannabis dispensary could ruin all the time and effort that's been put in to improving the park.
----
The owner of Jamestown's first state-approved cannabis dispensary says the former Bindle Barn on Boulevard Street is for sale... but, agreed it may not be the best place for a dispensary.  At the same time... Tim Scoma of "Lifted" says it would still be better than a liquor store, because dispensaries are heavily regulated by the state... including checking identification at the door, and having cameras inside and outside the business.  Scoma adds that 70% of their business is with people who are 60 or older.  Typically... they are looking for cannabis as an alernative to medication.  Mayor Schrecengost says the village board will likely discuss the issue at their October meeting.
